Some may think that it is best that the
students evaluate their teachers and others that the evaluation should be done
by a supervisor. However, I believe the best way to evaluate teachers is by
a combination of both for the following reasons.
To begin with, having a supervisor observe and
decide how to evaluate the faculty members gives the opportunity for an
objective and unbiased opinion. In many cases students do not like certain
teachers, because they are too stern and demanding, and like others, because they
can easily get high marks in their classes, even though the students do not
work hard for these grades. Thus, their evaluations are biased and often times
give the incorrect outlook on the teachers.
Secondly, you cannot always believe the thing
the students say about the perfromance of a teacher and the overall
ambiance in the classroom. Some students are negligent and apathetic. So, they
are unable to learn simply because they do not care if they will and frequently
do not even want to. Therefore, having a supervisor to do the evaluation is
more believable since they are an onlooker on the teaching process and he/she
would not account those apathetic students.
However, the teacher may act one way in front
of the supervisor and other when there is none. That is the reasons why I
believe that the supervisor’s check -ups have to be unpredictable and regular. Moreover,
in this case the students’ perspective will be helpful in the evaluation
process.
To sum up, having only the students to evaluate
their teachers can in some cases lead to biased and incorrect evaluation. On
the other hand, the teachers may “put a show” for the supervisor. That is why,
to my mind, it is best to evaluate teachers in both ways.
