LOVE. This four-letter word has been inspiring poets,
painters, and song writers for many years. People even started wars because of it in the past. It is the main theme of almost every novel, movie, and poem, and we also have a special day of
the year dedicated to appreciate it. No one can describe it as more of a feeling, but
what does science has to say about it?
♡
Love's primary function is well known– courtship and
reproduction. But how are we attracted to certain people in the first place? Well,
we often use the term “type” to express what kind of people we feel attracted
to but the real reason why we fall for them has to do a lot with our biology. We
are actually searching for someone who seems to be able to protect us, who is compatible
with us. Love also has something to do with natural selection.

Now let’s see what happens when you are already in
love.Though it is often associated with the heart, the true magic can be seen
in our brains. Love causes a massive biochemical mess. The surge of chemicals
released in your brain fires pleasure signals easily and makes you less
receptive to distractions and pain. The feel good hormones, which are released,
can make you feel the same way as someone on cocaine and make you want to spend
more and more time with your lover. There are cases of people addicted to their
partners because of those feel good biochemical reactions in the brain. Falling
in love seems a lot like an addictive rush. Simply put, we love being in love.
♡
During the first six months of a relationship there is
an immense continuous discharge of oxytocin. Oxytocin is also known as the “love”
hormone which drives the bonding process.
The weird part is the way our bodies release the
chemical adrenaline which corresponds to the fight or flight response. It, in
particular, is the reason why we experience symptoms like the ones when the part
of the sympathetic nervous system activates, so the body can stand to critical
situations as heart racing and sweating.
♡
Although the scientific explanation and the well know
function of love is continuing the species, we as humans do not know how to
express or explain it and it continues to puzzle us with its perplexing nature.
Well, as long as it inspires us to create masterpieces, I guess we have no
reasons to complain about the lines it forces us to cross to be with our
loved ones.
